Sal's story

Meet our campaign ambassador Sal.

Sal is a passionate patient advocate who uses her voice and her personal journey to raise awareness, inspire, and uplift others. Her clarion call “you can live a normal life after cervical cancer treatment”.

  • Background
  • Initiative
  • Future

Sal's journey to survivorship started way back when she made the decision to go for a normal routine check which turned out to be the defining moment of Her Reason for Being. From diagnosis, to treatment, and to recovery and survivorship, Sal commits to narrate her excruciating journey, challenges, and triumphs to change perceptions, fight stigma, and improve patient care systems.

Her Reason for Being is a communication campaign aimed at: amplifying cervical cancer survivors' voices to change perceptions and fight the stigma associated with the condition; Encouraging women to go for regular screening as a strategy to prevent, treat, manage and control cervical cancer; Promoting HPV vaccines for young girls aged between 10-14 years; and to build community champions

Her Reason for Being envisions a future there's zero stigma associated with cervical cancer. The campaign aims to normalize talks about cervical cancer, encouraging women to  normalize seeking cervical health services.

We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

Our Mission

Our aim is to save young girls and women from the plight of cervical cancer

Early detection saves lives. We are encouraging women to seek regular screening for early detection and treatment. Young girls between 10 and 14 years should be vaccinated to prevent HPV infection.

Vaccination

90% of girls fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine by the age of 15

Screening

70% of women screened using a high-performance test by the age of 35, and again by the age of 45;

Treatment

90% of women with pre-cancer treated and 90% of women with invasive cancer managed.

Elimination

Kenya to meet the 90–70–90 targets by 2030 to get on the path to eliminate cervical cancer within the next century.

Our Volunteers

Meet the team championing alongside Sal

Cervical cancer is preventable through the HPV vaccines. And if detected early, cervical cancer is treatable.
